GOLF VICTORIA State Team Manager’s Report: Perth Trip 2013

The girls arrived at the airport dressed, as asked, in their light blue trousers, white golf shirt, black shoes and blue Golf Victoria blazer. They all looked extremely smart.

2013 State Team:  left to right: Annette Pell, Team Manager;  Bianca Ling, Captain;  Darren Cole, Coach; Olivia Kline, Julienne Soo, Montana Strauss, Evelyn Clark and Georgia Macklan.

From the airport we had to go straight to the Western Australian Golf Course, as lunch was organised there for us.  After lunch we all changed and headed out on the course for our practice round for the Interstate Series. The girls were given Course Maps which assisted in their practice round.

The accommodation was at the Assured Waterside Apartments in South Perth and were excellent, with a full kitchen which gave me the option to cook several meals for the girls.  All meals were had in the Team Manager’s room. The laundry in each room was extremely handy. The girls had two rooms, one had two beds whilst the other held five, single beds.   Su Oh met us at the golf course and was with us for the next five nights leaving on the Saturday morning.

UNIFORMS:  The girls loved the uniform, especially the orange skort,  and the option of the four coloured shirts. The white shorts looked good, but were not always a practical colour.  Our uniforms were the envy of the girls from the other states.  Many favourable comments were given especially when the girls wore their black shirts with the orange skort.  Fashionable, stylish and the best dressed were comments received.

AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS :  MT. LAWLEY

The weather was extremely hot in Perth for our first week, with temperatures in the mid 30’s.  A practice round was held at Mt. Lawley on the Tuesday, and as we had not been booked in, we had to wait until 13:30 to hit off. The girls had a long afternoon by the time they played the course, plotted distance and green’s maps.

Results for the Junior Championships are as follows:

Su Oh:                                     74    71   72   71           -4       288          3rd place

Julienne Soo:                          77    74   75   75          +9       301          5th  place

Bianca Ling:                           77    80   80   80        +25       317        18th  place

Olivia Kline:                           85    81   88   81        +43       335        33rd place

Evelyn Clark:                          86    84   78   90        +46       338        38th place

Georgia Macklan:                   84    86   84   84        +46       338        38th place

Montana Strauss:                    76    73 (Withdrawn)

Saturday was our day off and some retail therapy was had.  This was followed by a trip to The Western Australian Golf Course for some chipping and putting practice, as we were unable to get on the course for another practice round.

THE INTERSTATE MATCHES  - THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN GOLF COURSE

Order of  Play:  1-5:  Julienne, Bianca, Georgia, Olivia, and Evelyn.

Sunday AM:              Vic. 2.5 / QLD 2.5

Sunday PM:               Vic. 4   / South Aust.  1

Monday PM:             Vic. 2   / W.A.  3

Tuesday AM:             Vic. 3  / N.S.W.  2  (In this Match,  Evelyn played at 3, Georgia 4 and Olivia 5)

Summary:

As Team Manager, I would like to say that all the girls were a pleasure to look after. There were no problems of them going anywhere unsupervised. They were all up and going on time each day. I found them all encouraging of each other. They all got on together when not on course, and this made it very easy.  Most of the girls had homework and chose to do that rather than going out.

Especially at the interstate matches it was wonderful to see the interaction of the girls with the other teams. It seemed the Vic. and N.S.W. girls formed a special bond, which was evident after their match.

Victoria and N.S.W. on Tuesday 16th April:  Victoria won  3/2

Congratulations go to the Queensland Team on a great effort, and it was wonderful to see all teams in with a chance.

To our own girls, congratulations on a job well done, considering that we did not have any reserves to call upon,  and the positions of the girls were hard to alter. Victoria did a wonderful job to end up equal 2nd with N.S.W..

Joyce Broadbent Shield

Held at Numurkah Golf Club on 7th March, 2013

The Team of Step Vogel, Jess Scapin, and Rachael Wilinson won all its matches with 6 o\points and 7 games. Rachael was undefeated and Jess and Step had 2 wins and a loss. The girls were very excited with their results.

A good time was had by all. President Sue Pogue and Brenda Broughton enjoyed the fine weather and seeing the girls do well. The girls increased their knowledge of golf and match play. Hopefully we will be seeing these names for a long time in the future of golf.

“WIN FROM SUDDEN DEATH”

The Club congratulates the Rich River team on their win in the Goulburn Valley Ladies Golf Association’s Summer Pennant at Kialla on Monday 23rd November.

Its been a very determined effort, having had to play a sudden death match with Hill Top last week to win the Western Division and a place in the final against East Division winners Numurkah.

The Summer Pennant has been running since the early 80’s and Rich River had never won, so the team set out to do their utmost to bring the shield home.  Numurkah were equally focussed as they had also not won the event.

The final was therefore set for an exciting finish to the competition and did not disappoint expectations.  After 4 matches were decided it was 2 wins each and the 5th match needed to play through to the 21st hole before a result.  Beryl Clack and Cath Kelly won the sudden death tie breaker, giving Rich River the victory.

All team members, including emergencies, Di Symons, Lyn James, Nancy Goldrick, Lucille George and Joy Kelly are congratulated on their excellent

performance.

Excerpt from the Shepparton News:

“It’s rich icing on the cake

Rich River is celebrating its first ever Goulburn Valley Ladies Golf Association Summer 4BBB Pennant win after defeating Numurkah in a play-off for the final at Kialla Golf Club on Monday 23rd November.

Rich River’s 3-2 win against Numurkah need one pairing to play three extra holes after a 2-2 tie in the initial pairs match-play competition.

Team captain Cath Kelly and Beryl Clack were Rich River’s winning pair, holding their nerve on the putting green to win the title.

Rich River had also needed sudden-death to see off Hill Top on the road to Monday’s final.

Rich River team member Pat Melville said the club had been trying to win the summer four-ball pennant since 1982 and the celebrations were fitting for the drought-breaking win.

Both teams followed the play-off contest around the three decisive holes, Rich River literally jumping for joy when victory was sealed.

“We have been trying to win this for 27 years and never managed to do it,” Melville said.

“Fortunately we’ve had a lot of luck this year.  We’ll have a big party to celebrate.”

Melville said the whole squad, fill-in players as well, had been important in taking Rich River to the title.”

Kialla Golf Club was a bit wet and muddy on monday, but the pairing from HillTop of Jan Coe (16) and Loretta Liffen (27), had no trouble with the conditions and were delighted to win this special event.

Kialla Golf Club is known for its hospitality, so if your golf's not good, don't worry. A big thankyou t othe Ladies for having us there.

The proceeds of the day support the Ladies G.V. Country Teams. Helen Michael donated the Salver trophies. This year Anne Johnson was unable to attend.
