Manager Rules and Handicapping

Golf Australia

Dear Simon,

After a recent meeting of our Match Committee (with women and men representatives) I completed the Golf Australia survey about handicapping on behalf our club.

There is one aspect about handicaps not included in the survey which we feel very strongly about, and that is, a minimum number of individual competition rounds of golf a member should have to play to maintain an Australian handicap.   In the past there was a requirement for men to play 5 rounds and a woman to play 3 rounds (I think) to maintain a handicap.

Under the new system we find members who have not played or who have only played one or two games in a year (or longer period of time) still have a handicap in the Golflink system and therefore printed on the handicap listing at the club.  This enables them to enter a club competition, especially a four ball event using the registered handicap.  Then the issue of disquiet arises amongst regular playing members, if a player with high handicap has a good score in a four ball event or in one major event a year!!!!

Hill Top, Tatura, requests that Golf Australia examine the minimum number of individual competition rounds that are required to be completed by a golf club member to retain an Australian Handicap as part of your current review of the handicapping system.

Furthermore, could you please advise me if there is anything we can do at club level in relation to the above issue as I cannot find anything about it via web site in the Golf Australia rules/polices.  Our understanding is that there is nothing we can do because the handicaps are “owned” by Golf Australia.

However, in terms of a question for action, could we have a club rule for a minimum number of competitions to be played and delete a member from Golflink if the requirement is not met?

Yours sincerely

Club Captain
