Goulburn Murray Golf Association Press Release

The above photo shows the last President of the Goulburn Valley District Golf Association Peter Fraser on the right congratulating the first President of the Goulburn Murray Golf Association David Roberts

On Thursday night 27 July at Shepparton golf club an historic meeting of the Men’s and Ladies Goulburn Valley Golf Associations took place. The meeting was chaired by Simon Brookhouse the Chief Executive of Golf Victoria and was attended by representatives of seventeen of the nineteen golf clubs in the district.

The first agenda item was a motion to amalgamate the two districts and this passed unanimously.  In doing so a new Association was formed combining both men and women in what will now be known as the Goulburn Murray Golf Association. The new name keeping the tradition of Goulburn and adding Murray to reflect the extent of the district and the number of clubs and members along the river.

The election of office bearers was next and Tatura’s Hill Top Club life member David Roberts was duly elected as the first President of the new Association.  Other Office Bearers elected are Lorraine Healy (Rich River) Vice President, Anne Beveridge (Tocumwal) Captain Women, Graeme Stevens (Rich River) Captain Men, Barry Scott (Kyabram Parkland) Secretary, Alex Howson (Hill Top Tatura) Treasurer and Roslyn Seymour (Tocumwal) committee member.

In accepting the position of President Mr Roberts payed tribute and gave thanks to long term Goulburn Valley’s Men President Peter Fraser for his commitment and dedication over many years. Roberts went on to thanks the Amalgamation Committee lead by former President of the Ladies District Sue Pogue and its Secretary Graeme Stevens for the hard work over three years to bring the amalgamation to fruition.  The amalgamation of the Goulburn Valley Men and Women Associations is part of the total amalgamation process of separate male and female golf administrations throughout Victoria.  Golf Victoria itself was born from amalgamation of the State men and women associations in 2010.

Mr Brookhouse from Golf Victoria while acknowledging that the Goulburn Valley Associations were some of the last in the State to undertake the amalgamation, congratulated the Committees for bringing the process to a smooth and positive conclusion and congratulated David Roberts and the other newly elected office bearers and wished them well and hoped for a great relationship between the new Goulburn Murray Association and Golf Victoria.

Mr Roberts set the priorities for the new Association to be more transparent and more inclusive for all clubs in decision making and for the traditions of the past while being the foundation for the future, to be questioned and changed if benefits can be established.

There will be a few months of transition from the old to the new and all planned Goulburn Valley Association events for both Men and Women will take place as scheduled. These include the district championships as well as the participation of the Goulburn Valley squads in both Senior and Junior country week competitions in Melbourne in October.
